Pool Resurfacing in Somis

Somis is an unincorporated farming community between Camarillo and Moorpark, surrounded by avocado and citrus orchards and row crops. Homes sit on larger rural lots, and pools here deal with conditions that city pools don’t: farm dust, orchard debris, sometimes well water, and long equipment runs.

Rural conditions

Dust and debris. Wind across open fields carries dust and plant material into pools. Fine dust raises the demand on filters and chemistry, and leaves that sit can stain plaster.
Well water. Some rural properties rely on private wells. Well water can carry iron, manganese, or other minerals that stain new plaster. Test the fill water before refilling a freshly resurfaced pool, and ask your plasterer about a metal sequestrant.
Agricultural spraying. If nearby orchards are sprayed, keep the pool covered when possible and test water afterward.

County rules

Because Somis is unincorporated, the County of Ventura (not a city) handles building permits for any pool remodel work that needs one, such as new equipment, gas, electrical, or structural changes. The county’s stormwater rules also apply to draining: don’t send pool water into ditches, fields, or drainage channels.

After the Mountain Fire

The November 2024 Mountain Fire burned through parts of Somis and destroyed homes and outbuildings. If your pool was in the fire area, check for heat damage to tile, coping, plaster near the waterline, and equipment, and document damage before cleanup for your insurer. See our notes for Camarillo Heights, which cover post-fire pool cleanup in more detail.

Distance and scheduling

Some contractors charge more or schedule differently for rural sites farther from their base. Long driveways may help truck access but mean longer hose runs. Give clear directions and gate codes when you request quotes.
