Every concrete (gunite or shotcrete) pool has an interior finish over the shell, and that finish wears out. Resurfacing, also called replastering or refinishing, replaces the worn surface with a new one. Done right, it makes the pool smoother, easier to keep clean, and better looking, and it protects the shell underneath.

Signs your pool needs resurfacing

  • Rough texture that scrapes feet or snags swimsuits
  • Gray or dark patches where plaster has worn thin to the shell
  • Delamination: flaking, blistering, or hollow-sounding spots
  • Stains that come back after treatment, or widespread mottling
  • Etching (pitting) from long periods of low pH or aggressive water
  • Cracks; fine surface “craze” cracks are usually cosmetic, but cracks with water loss need assessment

How resurfacing works

  1. Inspection and quote. The contractor looks at the surface, tile, coping, and fittings, and recommends a finish.
  2. Draining. Water is dechlorinated and drained according to local rules, usually to the sewer cleanout. In areas with high groundwater, the contractor manages hydrostatic pressure.
  3. Prep. Either the old surface is chipped out (removed to the shell) or roughened and treated with a bond coat. Chip-out is common when there are several layers or hollow spots.
  4. Tile and coping work, if included, usually happens before the new finish.
  5. Application. The finish is troweled on, often in one day for a typical pool.
  6. Fill. The pool is filled right away, without stopping, to avoid fill lines.
  7. Startup. Brushing and careful chemistry adjustments over the first weeks. The National Plasterers Council publishes widely used startup guidance; follow your plasterer’s instructions.

Finish options

The three main families are plaster, quartz, and pebble. Each costs more and generally lasts longer than the one before it. See our comparison.

Cost

Estimates only. Broad typical ranges based on published contractor and industry cost guides, not quotes and not our own data. Prices in coastal Southern California often run higher than national figures, and your pool’s size, condition, access, and finish choice can move the price a lot. Get written quotes.

Published contractor and industry cost guides commonly put resurfacing an average residential pool roughly in the mid four figures for standard plaster and into five figures for quartz and pebble, with tile, coping, and spa work extra. See our pool resurfacing cost guide for broad ranges and what moves them.

Fiberglass and vinyl pools

This site focuses on concrete pools. Fiberglass pools can be refinished with gelcoat or coatings, and vinyl pools get a new liner. Those are different processes; mention your pool type when you request a quote.

Before you hire

  • Verify the contractor’s license at cslb.ca.gov and confirm it fits the work.
  • Ask for proof of liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers’ compensation.
  • Get a written contract that lists the finish, color, tile, coping, prep method, drain covers, water disposal, startup service, and payment schedule.
  • California limits down payments on home improvement contracts, generally to 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, and has separate rules for swimming pool contracts. CSLB explains the details.

Frequently asked questions

How long does pool resurfacing take?

Often about a week from draining to refilling for a straightforward job, longer with tile, coping, or repairs. Startup care continues for a few weeks after filling.

Can I swim right after resurfacing?

Many plasterers allow swimming once the water is balanced, sometimes within days, but follow your contractor's startup instructions. Heating and salt are often delayed longer.

Is a chip-out always needed?

No. If the existing surface is sound, it may be prepped and covered with a bond coat. Multiple layers, hollow spots, or delamination usually call for chip-out.

Does resurfacing need a permit in Camarillo?

A like-for-like replaster often doesn't, but work that changes structure, equipment, gas, or electrical may. Ask your contractor or the city.
