Prices in coastal Southern California often run higher than national figures, and your pool’s size, condition, access, and finish choice can move the price a lot. Get written quotes.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How long will you stay? A longer stay favors durable finishes.
  • Who swims? Kids who play on steps may prefer smoother finishes.
  • How consistent is your water care? Plaster is least forgiving of chemistry swings.
  • What’s around the pool? Trees, dust, and wind favor finishes and colors that hide debris.
  • Where do you live? Hot inland areas like Moorpark and Simi Valley are harder on finishes than the coast.

Color tips

Finishes look darker and more saturated underwater. Wet samples or a visit to a finished pool give a truer picture. White and light finishes make water look bright aqua; gray, blue, and black blends make it look deeper and darker blue.

Brands

Many quartz and pebble finishes are sold under brand names with their own color lines and product warranties. Ask the contractor which product they use, whether a manufacturer warranty applies, and what voids it.

Frequently asked questions

Which pool finish lasts longest?

Pebble generally lasts longest, then quartz, then standard plaster, according to commonly cited figures. Water chemistry matters for all of them.

Which finish is smoothest?

Standard plaster and quartz are smoothest. Polished pebble is smoother than standard pebble.

Do darker finishes show more problems?

Dark colors can show mottling and scale more visibly. Many owners like the deeper water color anyway.
