In-ground concrete spas have the same kinds of interior finishes as pools, but they wear faster. Hot water speeds chemical reactions, jets scour the surface, and the small water volume makes chemistry swing more quickly. Many spas need refinishing before the pool they’re attached to.

Attached spas

When a spa is attached to a pool, it usually shares the pool’s finish. Resurfacing the spa alone is possible, but matching an older pool finish can be hard, so many owners refinish both together. If only the spa is done, choose a finish and color that complements the pool.

Spillovers and raised spas

Raised spas with spillovers have tile and coping on the spillway and outer walls. These areas often show calcium scale and loose tile. Ask whether the quote includes the spillway, raised wall tile, and coping.

Jets and fittings

While the spa is drained, it’s a good time to replace worn jet fittings, the spa light, and drain covers.

Cost

Estimates only. Broad typical ranges based on published contractor and industry cost guides, not quotes and not our own data. Prices in coastal Southern California often run higher than national figures, and your pool’s size, condition, access, and finish choice can move the price a lot. Get written quotes.

Published guides commonly put resurfacing an attached spa on its own somewhere around $1,500 to $5,000, and less when done as part of a pool project. Small spas cost more per square foot because of fixed setup costs.

Care after resurfacing

  • Follow your plasterer’s startup procedure; many advise waiting before heating a new finish.
  • Test spa water more often than pool water, especially with heavy use.
  • Use a spa cover to reduce evaporation and debris.

Before you hire

  • Verify the contractor’s license at cslb.ca.gov and confirm it fits the work.
  • Ask for proof of liability insurance and, if they have employees, workers’ compensation.
  • Get a written contract that lists the finish, color, tile, coping, prep method, drain covers, water disposal, startup service, and payment schedule.
  • California limits down payments on home improvement contracts, generally to 10% of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is less, and has separate rules for swimming pool contracts. CSLB explains the details.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my spa wear out faster than my pool?

Heat, jet action, and small water volume make chemistry swing more and wear the surface faster.

Can I resurface just the spa?

Yes, but matching an older pool finish can be hard. Many owners resurface both together.

When can I heat a newly resurfaced spa?

Follow your plasterer's instructions. Many advise waiting before heating a new finish.
